 Writers who are truly good at their craft often use the story that they are telling to tell another story, and the skills of that craft aren't just building suspense, or creating romance, but applying detail in a meaningful way. 

 We're all products of the world around us and quite often the artistically inclined are sponge-like when it comes to observing and analyzing the human condition. Their nature is to embody the present social consciousness around them and they express these feelings and thoughts through their work, like a conduit compressing vast quantities of information into smaller, more manageable ideas. Films are especially interesting in this regard because they're an amalgamation of different artists working towards a single vision, so you get multiple interpretations of the same concept. The acting might suggest one thing, while the music suggests another thing, and the lighting yet another. They're usually fairly close to each other, but they help shape a more 3-dimensional view of an idea. It's the fabric of film making. It's the culmination of multiple arts into a single form - writing, music, photography, performance, and even painting and sculpting for set design.
